Since 2018, when we rescued our first Sicilian stray dog, raising funds and awareness for the stray dogs in Menfi, Sicily, has become something very important to me and my family. These dogs are not given a second thought by most, except the few who routinely feed and monitor them. They are subject to indiscriminate breeding, disease, injury, abuse and the constant search for food.
There are a handful of small, individual shelters that help rehome stray dogs and raise funds to help with their veterinary care. However, there is no system to routinely neuter and monitor the free roaming populations. Neutering and education are paramount in maintaining a healthy and stable free roaming dog and cat population, but without financial support, this is sadly not possible.
Ultimately, it is my hope that we can keep helping the small shelters we know well to help more injured and abused stray animals, and eventually start up a Trap, Neuter and Release programme within Menfi, Sicily. Hence, 25% of all proceeds go straight into buying food and paying for veterinary treatment for these stray dogs.
